Visit to Xpujil.

Our first visit is to the town of Xpujil to see the archaeological site Xpuhil "Cola de gato". It is a very small archaeological area but with great history since in the surroundings of the town you can find many vestiges belonging to this place.

Visit to the archaeological zone of Becán.

The following route takes us to the Becá archaeological zone, "camino de la serpiente", if you are not afraid of the heights you can climb to the top of structure IX with a height of 42 meters, we will also find a stucco mask representing a ruler. One of the characteristics to be highlighted is that Becan is one of the archaeological sites with more discovered structures of Calakmul and that has an important relationship with the Mayan culture.

The next stop is to know the incredible archaeological zone Chicanná. Here we will find some masks that are of Chenes influences that represent the Mayan creator god known as Itzamna. You will not find words to describe the majesty of the structures and their enigmatic finishes that only the most expert guides know their meaning.

Biodiversity


This region deserves special attention for its great biological diversity that includes more than 80% of the plant species of the entire Yucatan Peninsula, in addition to 350 species of birds and almost 100 species of mammals. Perhaps even more important is the fact that it is home to several species of major vertebrates in danger of extinction in Mexico, such as the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), Central American tapir (Tapirus bairdii), jaguar (Panthera onca), puma ( Puma concolor), king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) and ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata), among many others.
Flora
The Calakmul region, in the center of the Yucatan Peninsula, is of great importance because it contains the most extensive forest area in the Mexican tropics; The Calakmul region is located in the state of Campeche and is mainly composed of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which, with 7238 km2, is the largest tropical protected forest in Mexico. It forms a forest continuum with the state reserves of Balam Ku (4 092 km2) and Balam Kin (1 109 km2) in Mexico and with the Maya Biosphere Reserve (18 838 km2) in Guatemala and the private reserve Rio Bravo (445 km2) ) in Belize. Among them, they constitute the largest tropical forest massif in Mesoamerica with more than 30,000 km2. However, this region has also been considered a "hot spot" for tropical deforestation.
Fauna
90% of amphibian species and more than half of the 105 reptile species of the peninsula have been recorded in the Calakmul region. Among them at least 7 species can be considered as endemisms. More than half of the bird species in the Yucatan Peninsula have been recorded in the Calakmul region. Like other groups, there is little knowledge about birds. However, the Calakmul region is considered an important geographic location for Neotropical migratory birds, which spend winters in the area. The Calakmul region is the area with the highest diversity of ungulates in Mexico, as there are two species of peccaries, three species of deer and the tapir. With the exception of other areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, Calakmul is a unique region for maintaining three species of cervids and is considered the last refuge of the tapir and Jaguar in Mexico.

The jaguar

The jaguar is and has been one of the most important charismatic species in the area. It has been estimated that in the Calakmul reserve there may be a population of between 200 and 300 jaguars.

The toucan

These birds are tropical and native to South America, which are characterized by having a huge peak of bright colors. If you walk carefully and alertly you will see them in the treetops.

The tapir

The tapir is the only living representative of the tapiridae family of the genus Tapirus and also considered a distant family member of the horse and the rhinoceros. The tapir is medium-large in size, approximately 2 meters long Northern Tapir and weighs between 150 and 300 kilos.

Ocellated Turkey

The ocellated turkey, turkey ocellated, or turkey (Meleagris ocellata) is a species of galliform bird of the Phasianidae family. It is a large bird, between 70-90 cm and 3 kg (female) to 4 kg (male) in weight, endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula. There are no known subspecies.

Spider monkey

It lives in the highest areas of the tropical forests and moves between the treetops to 25-30 m in height, in Mexico it is in Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
